Netflix Test Movie Review Disappointment

Netflix’s “Test” Movie Review: A Missed Opportunity

Netflix recently released a film called Test, which is available in multiple languages, including Hindi dubbing. The movie is a family-friendly watch, meaning it’s not aimed at adults or mature audiences. However, despite its potential, the movie falls short in several areas, especially when it comes to its quality.

At first, the movie seems interesting, but after a while, it loses its grip on the viewer. The plot doesn’t have a proper beginning, and the characters don’t have clear introductions, almost like you’re jumping straight into a random episode of a TV series. Cricket and cinema are two things that Indians love the most, and this movie tries to combine both, but it doesn’t deliver as expected.

The film features a cricketer at the lowest point in his career, with the media already calling for his retirement. He now desperately seeks to secure his place in the team before a crucial match. On the other hand, there’s a mad scientist trying to turn water into petrol and reduce the cost of diesel from ₹3500 to just ₹50. The third main character is a teacher who dreams of becoming a mother. Unable to fulfill this dream, she decides to kidnap another child and make them her own.

The first half of the movie is simple, advancing the story, but it’s in the second half where everything changes. A major twist comes to light, turning the narrative upside down. Unlike typical films where one hero fights multiple villains, this film portrays every character as having their own dark side, blurring the line between good and bad.

However, before you get excited and head over to Netflix, remember this: Having a great idea and turning it into a great film are two very different things. The movie features a star-studded cast, which initially seems promising, but sadly, all the actors are wasted in this passable film.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Test is the poor quality of the Hindi dubbing. Netflix’s approval of such a bad dub is confusing. We’ve seen instances in the past where South Indian films failed to match the emotion and dialogues in Hindi, and this film repeats that same mistake. Though R. Madhavan is a talented actor, in this film, his role does not do justice to his capabilities. If you’re a fan of his work, I would recommend skipping this movie.

While there are a few positive aspects in the film, like R. Madhavan’s character, the overall result is disappointing. The director fails to explain why certain things are happening, leaving the audience confused. The movie tries to mix too many concepts—fixing a cricket match, mafia, underworld, and so on—and leaves them all half-finished, with no real depth. If this movie had been made in Bollywood with top-tier actors, it would definitely have faced harsh criticism on social media.

Siddharth’s presence in the film is questionable. It’s unclear why he’s even in the movie, as his character doesn’t contribute much. The initial idea of the film was good, and the concept had potential, but the execution fails miserably. All the elements are wasted, and it’s hard not to feel like your time has been wasted as well.

The movie drags on like a slow-paced Test match, with the first four days being boring and uneventful, and only on the fifth day, do you see the result. If you’re patient enough to sit through this, you might find the movie a little tolerable, but otherwise, it’s best to skip it.

Rating: 1.5/5

  • R. Madhavan’s character (though underutilized)
